Zero – he has played so many minutes this season. In July last year, his contract with Jagiellonia Białystok, to which he joined two years ago, expired. In the spring round of last season, he even scored three goals and had four assists, but this did not convince the authorities of the Białystok club that the 32-year-old winger would remain a Jagiellonian player.
“Some Polish clubs are frivolous”
Maciej Makuszewski admits that he played decently in Białystok and there were many offers from other clubs.
– Inquiries, proposals were, but still weak, because foreign clubs presented offers on a level, with all due respect for this club. It also says a lot about the market, covid has made it financially not good at all. You have to be a mega fighter at a really good age to get good money. And I don’t think I’m a good footballer anymore, I’m average, so I have to face reality. But I want to play. I love football. I don’t want to sit on the couch, I’m healthy, you can squeeze a little bit more – not for a year or two, because I’m going to play a little longer. We will see how it comes out, let the health continue to improve – says Makuszewski in an interview with the portal
Makuszewski had offers from Turkey and Israel. – On the last day of the window in Turkey, I got an offer from there, but it was far from anything that had been agreed before. I guess they thought that since I don’t have a club, I will come under very poor conditions. I was also in Israel, but I didn’t feel very well there. Not the best living conditions met me there, I had no help from the club, I had to organize everything myself – says Makuszewski.
There were also inquiries from Polish clubs. – There was something there, but some clubs are frivolous. When we talk and agree on something, it is fitting to stick to it. There was a situation that the club agreed everything with me, and in the end did not even speak to confirm the contract – he adds.
His new club Leiknir Reykjavík finished eighth in the league last season. The Transfermarkt portal estimates the team’s staff at just EUR 1.3 million, and the most valuable footballer is Andres Escobar, valued at EUR 200,000. In Iceland, the level of competition is very low. The local league is only 51st place in the ranking. Only the Montenegrin league, the Andorran league and the league are worse. For comparison: Poland is in 28th place.
– Someone may be wondering if the Icelandic league is strong, I have seen the team play and there is no point in underestimating this competition. They are developing, and the Polish league – not fully. We are watching Ekstraklasa and the media coverage is cool, the walls, interviews, technologies, while the league level itself is in my opinion weaker than it was a few years ago – admits Makuszewski.
Makuszewski is a former Polish representative
Maciej Makuszewski is an experienced footballer who played as many as 110 games for Lech Poznań. In addition to appearances in Poznań and Białystok, he also played in Terek Grozny, Vitoria Setubal and. He has five appearances for the Polish national team. The last time he played with Mexico (0: 1) in November 2017 during the term of Adam Nawałka, with whom he also made his debut. But he will also not have good memories of that game, because we were smashed by the Danes 0: 4.
His career slowed significantly at the turn of 20017 and 2018, when he tore the cruciate ligaments in his knee.
