With a jump of 140.5 m and 140 m, Lindvik was the only one to double the size of the hill in Zhangjiakou. He won the gold medal by defeating the Olympic champion from normal facility Ryoyu Kobayashi on Saturday. proved that he was the main favorite for the triumph in China for a reason.
“Marius’ jump was technically perfect.” The favorite did not disappoint. Lindvik is the champion on the large hill
Why was it rightly called a favorite? First of all, he is jumping extremely steadily this season. Secondly, he jumps at a fantastic level. Lindvik won the last World Cup competition in Willingen and was on the podium in five of the last six competitions in which he participated.
In Beijing the 23-year-old only disappointed on the normal hill when he was seventh and missed his chance for a medal with a weak first jump. On a large object, it did not start after his thoughts either. First, he couldn’t switch to the unusual hill inrun and although he was the best in qualifying, he lost 2.2 points after the first round. And so he managed to make a better jump than the Japanese in the second round and win.
– I knew after Marius jump that Ryoyu would not defeat him. It was perfect, technically perfect. And after the jumper gets such a result, it is extremely difficult to beat him – describes Oyvind Gronn, one of the first coaches of Marius Lindvik, who works with him on technical elements to this day. – I cried only a few minutes after the competition, it must have occurred to me. I feel great emotions, this is an amazing success for Marius – he says, excited.
He started jumping at the age of 11. Twelve years later it is Olympic gold
– Marius started training late. He was 11 years old when his father brought him to me. I gave him skis and at the same time became his coach. First, I watched him jump and gave little comments, then I conducted regular training sessions. What impressed me about it? The most probably the fact that four years later he made his debut at the level of the Norwegian national team, and in 2015 in – says Gronn.
Lindvik’s greatest growth was in 2018-2020. In the first one he scored his debut points in P¦, then he stood on the podium for the first time in Klingenthal and won in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. – the 68th 4-Hills-Tournament is the moment when I knew that he would be in the lead for good. Did I expect to see him on the Olympic podium someday, and to the highest degree? I knew he could afford it. That he can work for it. And that’s what he did, argues Oyvind Gronn.
How is Lindvik different? “Nobody Can Play It”
We also ask the trainer what is best about Lindvik’s jumps. – Just start from the boom. Marius does it exceptionally smoothly and dynamically, no one can recreate it. He perfected it. And this translates into each subsequent element, that is the second phase of flight, for which his rivals praise him – assesses Gronn.
– His body position and the way he guides the skis just outside the door are something impossible to copy. You have to put money for his medal in Beijing, that’s for sure – noted another Norwegian coach, Marius Huse, before the Olympics. And he was right. – I saw him before the competition in Willingen at the Holmenkollen in Oslo. He was amazing. He always wears a funny, very tight suit for training sessions and trial series. Because he knows that he will win in the “starting” competitions – revealed Huse.
Stoeckl: Lindvik has become a professional
– Marius is one of the most stable players in the world. In Willingen he built up a lot of self-confidence. He is ready for something big – Norwegian coach Alexander Stoeckl announced his jumper’s start in Beijing. He assured that mentally there may be no one stronger than Lindvik.
– In summer, the most important was motor training and work on technique. He trained very hard, he became a professional. I would add a landing to the best elements of his jump. In this element, it developed throughout the season, added Stoeckl.
And Lindvik landed the telemark at the highest point of the Olympic podium. There was no sensation in this, but the 23-year-old himself earned the title of a favorite. Now his goal will be to stay in the lead. And rather to be second or Stefan Kraft than to repeat the story of the Olympic champion from Pyongyang Andreas Wellinger. Lindvik has everything to set trends. And that the rivals should think about catching up with him.
