The snowboard cross of mixed teams made its debut as a competition in the Winter Olympics. The rivalry began with the run of the competitors, and only after them the competitors set off on the route, including the time differences that were achieved by the men at the finish line. As expected, the competition brought a lot of emotions.
Great success for experienced Americans. “It’s never too late”
The fierce struggle to win was between the Americans and Italy, who were completely outside of the competition for the rest of the game. First, Nick Baumgartner had a fierce fight with Omar Vistin, but at the very end of the route he built himself a clear advantage and was the first to cross the finish line.
There were definitely more emotions in the competition between the ladies, where Lindsey Jacobellis was racing with Michel Moioli to the last meters. In this case, it was the Italian who made a big move from the start and built a considerable advantage for herself halfway through the route. From that moment, however, the American quickly regained more meters and overtook her rival just before the finish line. Behind her was the lucky Baumgartner, who knew that they had managed to win the gold medal in their fourth start at the Olympics.
It is the second gold medal for Jacobellis at the Beijing Olympics. Earlier, the American triumphed in individual snowcross. In total, the experienced snowboarder already has three Olympic medals, the first of which she won in 2006 in Turin. For Baumgartner it was a lifetime success at the end of his career. For the 40-year-old it was the first and last Olympic medal, as it announced that after Beijing he would end his adventure with professional sport.
– It’s never too late to take what you want from life and follow your dreams. You will be disappointed if you quit too early. You get one chance in your life and you shouldn’t let anything stop you. It doesn’t matter how old you are, Baumgartner told reporters after the rivalry ended.
