Russia needs to take a break for one or three Olympics after a doping scandal involving figure skater Kamila Valieva. This opinion was voiced by the first president of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), the oldest member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Dick Pound, writes Reuters.
Doping scandals involving Russia need a less lenient approach, he said. The former head of WADA urged Russia not to participate in the Olympics “until they take everything under control.” Pound also stated that Russian athletes are not helping themselves because they have not repented.
“They do not admit anything, but they will appeal against any decision. It was probably too lenient to allow them to compete under the flag of the Russian Olympic Committee,” he added.
Valieva’s dubious doping test became known on February 9. In this regard, the IOC has postponed the award ceremony following the results of the team tournament of the Olympics. The Russian team, which included Valieva, became the winner in this type of program.
On February 11, the International Testing Agency (ITA) officially confirmed that the skater’s December 25 doping test tested positive for the banned trimetazidine.
