First international success

On March 27, 1938, four young people from Guayaquil –Carlos Luis and Abel Gilbert, Luis Alcívar and Ricardo Planas– conquered the title of South American Swimming Championship and gave our country the first international success in the history of Ecuadorian sports.

The gold medal is considered a feat because there were only four athletes who traveled to compete by decision of the Arduino Tomassi coach and they did it only in freestyle. At that time no one believed that a small, inexperienced team could defeat full casts from powerful nations such as Argentina, Uruguay, Chile or Peru, which already had participations, Olympic titles and registered at least a dozen swimmers.
