‘We are not one hundred’, says Richard Carapaz at the start of the Tour de la Provence, before participating in the Ecuadorian Cycling Championship | Other Sports | sports

Richard Carapaz said this Thursday, at the end of the prologue of the Tour de la Provence, that he is not “one hundred” fit at the start of the season, but that competitions such as the French “are important for the main objective”, the Giro de Italy in May.

“We are not one hundred, but these races are important for the main objective. At the moment, we have the Giro, that is the plan that we are going to follow. We are focused on going to the Giro in good shape and trying to do the best we can”, the Ecuadorian cyclist told the press.

The Locomotive of Carchi –which did not finish the Estrella de Bessèges last week, a race in which it suffered a fall in stage 3 and where the curtain was opened on the season– crossed the finish line of the first section of Provence in 53rd place, at 38 seconds behind the winner, his teammate in Ineos Grenadiers, the Italian Filippo Ganna.

Carapaz wore a bandage on one leg this Thursday, due to the cuts and bruises suffered on February 4.

The National and the Giro

Carapaz confirmed his presence in the National Cycling Championship, whose road test will be held on Sunday, February 20, in Quito.

This is how the Carchense detailed it: “After Provence, I will return home, I will do the national championships, then Tirreno and Catalonia, and directly to the Giro”.

The Tour de la Provence will run until Sunday.

The National individual time trial will be on Friday, February 18, over 38.2 km (four laps) for the elite men’s category. Meanwhile, the circuit will be 163.2 km (17 laps).

The Tirreno-Adriatico has a date at the beginning of March, while the Volta a Catalunya will be at the end of the same month (21 to 27).

The 2022 Giro d’Italia will run from Friday, May 6 to Sunday, May 29.
