Legislators Ferdinan Álvarez, from the Union for Hope caucus; Jorge Abedrabbo, from the Christian Social bloc; and Mario Ruiz, from Pachakutik, this February 10, announced an oversight action to the dismissal process of the main authorities of the Council for Citizen Participation and Social Control (CPCCS).
Next Monday, Álvarez announced, they will call the Minister of Government, Alexandra Vela, the leadership of the National Police and the four members of the new majority of the Council to explain their actions in the face of the dismissal of Sofía Almeida and David Rosero as president and vice president, respectively.
He commented that on February 9 democratic principles have been violated and that while police are lacking in Guayaquil, a dozen gendarmes were matching the institutional coup in the CPCCS.
The crisis erupts in the Council for Citizen Participation by having two heads in the presidency and vice-presidency
As a National Assembly, far from political flags, we will defend democracy, affirmed the representative of UNES for Guayas, who appeared accompanied by two legislators from the PSC and Pachakutik, who maintain that the government of Guillermo Lasso is behind all this crisis generated in the CPCCS.
They also asked the president of the National Assembly and the Legislative Administration Council (CAL) to process the political trial against the councilors Hernán Ulloa, Francisco Bravo, María Fernanda Rivadeneira and Ibeth Estupiñán. This process presented with the support of 72 signatures is under analysis in the Legislative Technical Unit (UTL), before qualification.
Abedrabbo clarified that his PSC bench is not defending people but rather the institutions of the CPCCS and the country’s democracy. Absolutely nothing can be done by force, he replied.
Ruiz said that the legislators “patriots and rebels of the Pachakutik movement” will be on the side of legal security and this must be respected. “We are going to inspect all kinds of corruption not only in the CPCCS, without political banners,” he stressed.
On the government side, legislator Juan Fernando Flores, from the Creating Opportunities block (CREO), called on the assembly members to present evidence to support the accusations that there is some relationship in what has happened in the CPCCS, with the national government.
He said that his organization is awaiting the decision of the justice regarding what happened in the CPCCS, which in his opinion was an act of a majority that took a position against the person who at that time served as president of the Council, and produced a new election.
He stated that Almeida does not respond to several complaints regarding alleged attempts to capture power, for which the big question is who wanted to capture power and for what.
He indicated that his bench has reviewed the processes that have been taking place and what has been done in the CPCCS, until now, complies with the legal processes and a new designation of who chairs this council would be established.
Flores affirmed that the presence of the police on February 9 in the CPCCS is not by decision of the Government, but by request of the person who presides over the Council, who requested the accompaniment of the public force. (I)
