Seventeen million tickets for the Qatar-2022 World Cup were requested by fans during the first sales period, the International Football Federation (FIFA) announced on Tuesday.
there will only be a little over two million tickets actually available for the first World Cup played in an Arab country, to be held in November and December this year.
“Fans across the globe showed their eagerness for the biggest event in world football by requesting 17 million tickets during the first ticket sales period for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, which lasted just 20 days. Most of the requests correspond to the residents of the host country (Qatar)”, FIFA explained in its statement.
“During this first random selection sale period, requests also came en masse from countries with a strong football tradition and certain key markets such as Saudi Arabia, Argentina, Brazil, United Arab Emirates, United States, France, India, England and Mexico”, he added.
The tickets most in demand by fans are those for the tournament final, scheduled at the Lusail Stadium (capacity 80,000 spectators) on December 18, “with a total of 1.8 million requests received”, according to FIFA.
The first ticket sales period began on January 19 and ended this Tuesday. The FIFA indicated that it will now focus on verifying requests and possible purchase restrictions before proceeding to the allocation of seats.
“All applicants will receive a communication from Tuesday, March 8, in which they will be informed of if your request has been accepted, partially or totally, or has been rejectedand both the instructions to be followed and the deadline to pay the assigned tickets will be provided, ”explained the organization.
