In professional boxing, as in no other specialty, there are four legally recognized organizations worldwide and each of them has its champions in the same divisions; even a boxer can be first in two or more of those entities.
The officially recognized entities are the World Boxing Organization (WBO), the World Boxing Council (WBC), the World Boxing Association (WBA) and the International Boxing Federation (IBF).
The Ecuadorian Jack Culcay, nationalized germanwho competes in the 69.9-kilogram (154-pound) division, ranks second in the ranking from the WBO; Meanwhile he American Jermell Charlo ranks first in the WBO, WBA, and WBC; and the Argentine Brian Castano is first in the IBF.
On March 19 they will meet in Los Angeles (United States) Castaño and Charlo to define the owner of the four world belts; and in July, the winner will face Culcay.
About the future combat, the Ambateño points out: “I have been training every day with the team and helping as a coach as well. I have a fight in March, it will be friendly; and in July I will do it for the world championships. I have to wait for the winner between Charlo and Castaño”.
“I haven’t fought officially for a year and a half, and I’m in a position to do so with one of the world champions,” explained the boxer from Germany.
Regarding a probable fight with Castaño, Culcay says that he has already faced him: “I have already fought with Brian Castaño, when he was amateur in the 2009 World Championship, in Italy. I beat him in a four fight rounds. After that, I have not faced each other. He is my height (1.70 meters), he is strong, fast, he moves well, he puts his hands out a lot in the whole fight. With him it will be more difficult, because he has conditions for twelve rounds; while with Charlo I have not collided ”.
Apart from the fight he may have against Charlo or Castaño, Culcay points out that they could also schedule him a fight with a Russian whose name he does not remember, but he acknowledges: “He is big, he hits hard, but he is not as fast, and that is what difference: I move well with my legs, I have to take more punches. The Russian is strong, but he is not effective. I have to see how I beat him if they schedule the duel with him.”
In relation to the height of his rivals, Culcay points out: “It’s a bit difficult when the container is higher, You have to make a greater effort to touch him, but I think that with good training I can win, I move better, I have to make a greater effort”.
“Everyone, in general, trains in the United States. The Russians too. I do it in Germany; but when I had to fight in 2019, in Minnesota (United States), I did the preparation in Quito: the altitude is very good for training.”
Fight in Ecuador
The Ambateño boxer points out that he is looking to win the auction so that his next fight will be in Ecuador. “My promoter is thinking that the next fight will be there, we already talked about it, we want that because I was born there and I want to fight there in my country. But we have to win the auction, because the promoters talk about a lot of money when they fight for the title. and the one who puts in the most wins the seat”.
The Ecuadorian recalled that in 2019, when he traveled to Quito to train before his fight with the Ukrainian Serhiy Derevianchenko, he participated in the auction, lost it for $20,000 and the fight took place in the United States.
Now the boxer, who has won 29 official fights, 13 of them by KO, said: “I want to fight in Ecuador, we don’t care if there are no people because of the pandemic; I would like to box in Ecuador, even if few or no people go; and my promoter said that, if we do the fight in Ecuador, the entrance will be free, he does not want people to pay, but rather that they attend so that it fills up and they support us. I like that idea”.
Culcay notes that in the time of the pandemic he has trained with fear. “We were locked up because we were at home, but with a lawyer helped us so that we can train privately and we did fights in the gym, and the last official fight I had was in June 2020 against the French challenger Howard Cospolite, and it allowed me to retain the world title. That victory allows me to seek the title now”. (D)
