The Colombian cyclist Egan Bernal crashed two weeks ago at high speed against a bus on the highway that goes from Bogotá to Tunja, at the height of the municipality of Gachancipá, when the vehicle had stopped, an impact that caused fractures in the femur and the right knee, vertebrae and eleven ribs, among other injuries.
Bernal assured that the accident changed his life in a matter of seconds because “at one point I was preparing for the Tour de France, giving everything in the time trial, and the next second I was fighting for my life.” He defined this event as “a rebirth”.
From the clinic where he was treated, it was pointed out on Sunday that the cyclist was in the third phase of the trauma, ready to start his rehabilitation process. He was released from the hospital and will continue to recover from the accident on an outpatient basis.
Last Thursday Bernal said on social networks that he had “almost 20 broken bones” in the accident in which he almost lost his life.
In a video revealed by the Colombian channel RCN The precise moment in which the Ineos Grenadiers team cyclist collides with the bus, which had stopped to drop off a passenger, is seen. On the bicycle side, it had a break in the front tire, breakage in two parts of the frame and, in addition, the aerodynamic time trial helmet presented significant damage.
Bernal was preparing in his country for the 2022 season with the aim of recovering the yellow jersey of the Tour.
His presence at the top cycling event, which starts on July 1, was put on hold. (D)
