on Sunday he won the first individual Olympic medal in his career in Beijing. The 31-year-old was on the lowest step of the podium. Before him were the Olympic champion, Japanese Ryoyu Kobayashi, and runner-up, Austrian Manuel Fettner.
An amazing feat of Kubacki
The David Kubacki medal is all the more valuable as hardly anyone ever put on it. The more that the Polish jumper this season is currently only on the 37th place. In fourteen starts he scored only 63 points. This season was the highest in the competition for the inauguration – it took 13th place in the Russian city of Nizhny Tagi³.
Dawid Kubacki in Beijing did an extraordinary thing. For the first time in 34 years, such a low-ranked athlete in the World Cup managed to win an Olympic medal. In 1988, Matjaz Debelak performed a similar feat. The Slovenian jumper was then on the 42nd position in the World Cup, and on the large hill he won a bronze medal at the Winter Olympics in Calgary.
Interestingly, at the same Olympics, but on a normal hill – Czech Jirí Malec also won bronze, being 47th in P¦.
The sixth was, the 20th Piotr lived, and Stefan Hula 26.
There won’t be too much time to celebrate Kubacki’s success, however. On Monday, February 7, the Polish jumper will take part in the next competition on the normal hill in Zhangjiakou. At At 12.45, the start of the mixed teams competition is planned.
