Ecuadorian Olympic athletes lament the murder of sprinter Álex Quiñónez in Guayaquil | Other Sports | sports

Hours after confirming the murder of the Ecuadorian sprinter Álex Quiñónez, who in 2012 became the seventh fastest man on the planet in the 200-meter sprint, several tricolor Olympic athletes as well as entities related to the sport expressed their condolences for the event.

On Friday night, Quiñónez was shot dead in the Colinas de la Florida sector, northwest of Guayaquil.

According to witnesses, several subjects wearing suits similar to those of the National Police arrived at the site and fired at two people, one of them Quiñónez.

Through his Twitter account, cyclist Richard Carapaz expressed his condolences to the Quiñónez family. Similarly, surfer Dominic Barona pointed out that the sport was in mourning.

Sprinter Ángela Tenorio, through her Instagram account, shared a video where Quiñónez was singing and also wrote in an image: “Little brother flies high.”

The Ecuadorian Olympic Committee (COE), the Guayas Sports Federation (Fedeguayas), the Ministry of Sports, the Ecuadorian Football Federation, the Ecuadorian Athletics Federation as well as other sports entities expressed their condolences regarding the violent act.

Quiñónez was excluded from the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games due to a twelve-month suspension imposed by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) after determining the body to commit three faults in the geolocation update for anti-doping controls.

Within his sports career, the 32-year-old sprinter achieved medals in Bolivarian Games, South American championships, and the world athletics championship, among others. (I)
