The phrase was posted on Friday night by the Minister of Sports, Sebastián Palacios, after learning of the murder of sprinter Álex Quiñónez.

Quiñónez was shot dead on Friday night in the Colinas de la Florida sector, in the northwest of Guayaquil.

According to witnesses, several subjects wearing suits similar to those of the National Police arrived at the site and fired at two people, one of them Quiñónez.

The minister recalled the joy that the athlete gave Ecuador at the London 2012 games. “The joys that you kept giving us, because we knew all the potential you had,” he recalled.

Palacios was the first government authority to confirm the murder of the athlete that occurred in the northwest of Guayaquil.

The minister expressed his condolences to the family, friends and athletes through another tweet in which he confirmed the death.

Palacios said that the police were at the scene and that the competent authorities were conducting the pertinent investigations.

On July 26, Quiñónez apologized to Ecuador because he was unable to represent the country at the Tokyo games. “I wanted to give the people of Ecuador an emotion …”, he said.

The cyclist Richard Carapaz was one of the Olympians who used his social networks to regret what happened to Quiñónez. “Regrettable about our dear #alexquinonez, my heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones. Peace in his grave, ”he wrote on Twitter. (I)
