The fans and experts in Denmark were surprised by the departure of Wilczek this winter. It is true that he was not as successful as in the previous club, Broendby IF, but 11 goals in 32 games last season and good form at the beginning – three goals in the first three games – were a decent result. However, a lot changed in October, when the team’s worse results coincided with Wilczek’s health problems and led to the dismissal of coach Stale Solbakken. The Pole recovered, but not to the match team.
The former coach of FC Copenhagen did not look at the consequences. He wanted Kamil Wilczek despite the scandal
The new coach Jess Thorup wasn’t betting on him. He explained to journalists that Wilczek did not fit his playing system, and the 34-year-old forward contested that he had already played in Denmark in various systems and he was able to find himself in each one. There was no bond between them. It was Solbakken who insisted on bringing the Pole to Copenhagen, although it was known that it would cause huge controversy among the fans. Earlier, Wilczek played for four years, i.e. for his biggest rival, FC Copenhagen. Not only that – he became the best scorer in history (92 goals) and assured that he had a special feeling for this club. – Once in Broendby, always in Broendby. You will be in my heart – he said when he was leaving.
He did not expect then that after six months he would be back in Denmark. He failed in Turkey. In 14 games, he scored only one goal and when it was possible to return to Copenhagen, he did not think for long. He even said he had no doubts. Broendby fans considered it a betrayal and wrote on Danish Wikipedia: “When he signed a contract with FCK in August 2020, he became known as Polish Judas.” They called him “the rat” and the “traitor”. The transfer of the Pole to FC Copenhagen was even commented on by the Danish minister for foreigners and integration, Mattias Tesfaye, who in social media called him “Kamil the Payout”.
Wilczek was the first foreigner to play in both Copenhagen clubs. He was protected and the local police advised him where to live, what type of apartment to choose and which places to avoid. As we found out, the harsh criticism persisted for a month. Most of the insults appeared on the Internet, while there was only one incident on the street for a year and a half in which a fan Broendby shouted about his transfer to FC Copenhagen.
The fans of his new club also looked askance at the transfer. “It was ex-Captain Broendby, he’d been buying their T-shirts up to two months earlier. Just look at his statements. He is the hero of the most unforgivable transfer possible. There will be no chants or support from us for the new “nine” at the matches. Wind, Daramy and Kaufmann – they are our future – a group of the most committed fans wrote in a statement.
Piast Gliwice did not expect such an opportunity. There are difficult decisions ahead of Waldemar Fornalik
Leaving to, however, has nothing to do with the stands and the tense situation in the city. FC København closed the transfers of younger strikers, Wilczek had one of the highest salaries in the club, and the new coach did not bet on him, so he told the Pole before Christmas that he would not get too many chances and it would be better to look for a new club. If, however, on the last day of January, Wilczek had not terminated the contract by mutual agreement, he would not have joined Piast Gliwice. The club could not afford to buy it. FC Copenhagen agreed to this form of separation, just to throw him off the payroll.
Wilczek goes to Piast for the third time. He played in Gliwice in the 2009/2010 season and then in 2013-2015. – Every time I came back to Piast, the team was at least a level higher. When I came for the first time, Piast was in a completely different place. Now I come back after seven years of playing abroad and it is clearly visible that the club is much higher and has written a really great story in recent years, so I’m even more glad to be back – said Wilczek for the club website.
In spring, the coach will have one of the strongest lines of attack in the league at his disposal. A few weeks before Wilczek, Rauno Sappinen came to Piast. The Estonian cost 400,000. euro so it seemed like he would be the primary striker. But then in Piast, they did not expect that there would be an opportunity with Wilczek. A long contract – until the summer of 2024 – shows that there are serious plans for him in Gliwice. It is hardly surprising. I am talking about the third best scorer in the history of Piast, a former Polish representative and a striker who left the league as the top scorer. Seven years have passed, but it proves that 34 years is not much for a forward in the league. No wonder that fans and the club’s management are filled with delight.
– It’s hard to imagine a player more proven than Kamil. The player feels very comfortable with us and has proved in the past that he is an effective striker. We were in constant contact all the time and we knew that if Kamil came back to Poland, he would play in the Hub. It was our dream and we are very happy to announce this transfer – said sports director Bogdan Wilk.
Wilczek may make his debut on Saturday in the match against, although at the club they know that it takes more time to return to full form.
