One dead and five injured, including a child, during clashes in neighborhoods of Esmeraldas

One deceased, one person reported missing and five injured is the result of armed clashes in the neighborhoods on the banks of the Esmeraldas River. The incidents were reported in the last 48 hours.

Police indicated that the clashes would be between criminal groups.

The first incident with firearms happened at about 11:00 yesterday in the streets of the El Palmar 1 neighborhood, where a 23-year-old man, an 8-year-old boy and a 44-year-old disabled person were injured.

The minor was admitted to the operating room for gunshot wounds to the abdomen, leg and arm, according to the medical report.

This attack occurred a few blocks from where Víctor Márquez Rodríguez, 20, was shot to death. This event occurred in the streets Pedro Vicente Maldonado (Malecón) and Pichincha, Las Malvinas sector, at noon on Thursday.

Some twenty violent deaths were recorded in Esmeraldas and San Lorenzo due to conflicts between criminal gangs and other events from January to this weekend, according to the National Police Subzone 8.

Women from the El Palmar 1 neighborhood protested this armed incident that put their lives at risk and the projectiles even embedded themselves in their homes, indicating that they are people from other sectors who would come to threaten them.

A person suspected of this shooting was captured at a home in the Las Malvinas neighborhood.

At about 10:00 p.m. on Friday, the murder of Dino Estupiñán Alcívar (36 years old) was recorded, in Pedro Vicente Maldonado and Perdomo Franco streets, sector of stop 9.

The victim was wounded with a hitman-style weapon. The wounded man was transferred to the Las Palmas type C sub-centre, where his death was confirmed.

Relatives of Estupiñán Alcívar do not know the motivation for the crime, since he was a sports leader and dedicated himself to his professional activities.

One hour before this violent death, the disappearance of a citizen was reported aboard a truck in the JR Coronel street sector, stop 11 sector, where a person with a firearm was injured.

According to witnesses, six subjects from a truck would have retained said person, who would be a relative of the seafood merchant Elvis García, murdered in the Propicia 1 neighborhood, south of the city, last December.

The Bishop of Esmeraldas, Antonio Crameri, lamented the acts of violence and other crimes in Ecuador, proposing to promote new models of harmonious coexistence and peaceful management of conflicts.

“For this we ask for the commitment of all people of good will, to seek paths of peace and reconciliation, justice and enforceability of rights, full compliance by all state institutions that must protect and serve their citizens. ”, the church representative wrote in a letter. (I)
