The torch relay for the 2022 Winter Olympics has started in Beijing, China, TASS reports.
The ceremony began in the Olympic Park in the north of the Chinese capital. The relay started at 09:16 local time (04:16 Moscow time).
In total, about 1.2 thousand people aged 14 to 86 will participate in the relay race. The torchbearers will represent various segments of the population – from schoolchildren and students to representatives of science, culture, education and healthcare.
The Beijing Olympics will be held from 4 to 20 February. The Paralympics will also be held from 4 to 13 March. The games will be held in three clusters at once – Beijing, Zhangjiakou and Yanqing. The World Health Organization said it sees no serious risks in hosting the Winter Olympics in Beijing, given the strict epidemiological measures and other steps taken by the Chinese authorities in the run-up to the competition.
