Press Secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov reacted to the result of the final match of the Australian Open-2022 between Spaniard Rafael Nadal and Russian Daniil Medvedev. His words are quoted by RIA Novosti.
The Kremlin spokesman congratulated Nadal on his victory. “Our Medvedev is great, but the beauty of sport is that there can be only one winner and only the strongest,” Peskov said.
Earlier on January 31, Gilles Servara, Medvedev’s coach, commented on the athlete’s defeat by Nadal. According to the expert, the Russian could play better and sharper.
The Australian Open final took place on 30 January. The decisive match of the tournament in Melbourne lasted more than five hours. The meeting ended with a score of 2:6, 6:7 (5:7), 6:4, 6:4, 7:5 in favor of Nadal. As a result of the tournament, the Russian earned more than $1.1 million.
Medvedev won the Grand Slam once in his career. It happened at the US Open in 2021.
