The Russian women’s biathlon team was described with the words “closed club”

Two-time Olympic medalist, former head of the Russian Biathlon Union (RBU) Vladimir Drachev shared his opinion about the country’s women’s team. His words are quoted by TASS.

Drachev praised the victory at the European Biathlon Championships of ex-Russian Alina Stremous, representing Moldova since 2020. “A girl in the Russian team would never have reached the international level and would not have been able to perform, break through these thorns to the stars,” he said. The specialist compared the Russian women’s team with a closed club and said that many athletes prefer to go to the Belarusian or Slovak team.

In November, Drachev criticized the split of the Russian men’s team into two groups. “This is the path to anarchy – the mother of order, when an athlete does what he wants,” he said. The ex-head of the RBU was surprised that many biathletes changed the group of senior coach Yuri Kaminsky to the team of Sergei Bashkirov, who was initially considered as a youth coach.

Russian biathletes won five medals at the European Championships. Evgenia Burtasova became the winner in the individual race, Natalia Gerbulova took the bronze. The men’s team has three silver medals. Anton Babikov finished second in the individual race, Nikita Porshnev in the sprint, and Petr Pashchenko in the pursuit.
