The stages of Tour de France 2023 that will host the Basque Country were presented this Wednesday, January 26, in an act that took place in Vitoria-Gasteiz. In it, the director of the Tour, Christian Prudhomme, offered details of the routes of the stages that will cross the Basque roads on the edition 110 of the French round.
the lehendakari, Iñigo Urkullu, was present at the event that was held in the capital of the Basque Autonomous Community, together with more political representatives and those from the world of cycling.
The first stage will start and finish in Bilbao on July 1 with a stage of 185 kilometers distributed in a circular itinerary that will cover the Urdaibai biosphere reserve on the Biscayan coast. It will cross the town of Gernika-Lumo on two occasions, with climbs to Vivero and Pike Bidea and with the arrival next to City Hall Bilbao. They will be a total of 3,320 meters of elevation gain, the greatest in history at the premiere of the Tour de France.
The second day will extend up to 210 kilometers and will link Vitoria with San Sebastián. It will tour the provinces of Álava and Gipuzkoa, with a final climb to Jaizkibel, located 20 kilometers from the arrival.
The third stage will start from the Biscayan town of Amorebieta-Etxano and will end in Baiona (Lapurdi). After traveling 80 kilometers along the Basque coast and crossing San Sebastián and Irun, it will enter Iparralde. The finish line will be located in Baiona, although the organization did not want to reveal where the third day will end.
