Egan Bernal undergoes surgery for thoracic and cervical polytrauma after suffering an accident while training

Egan Bernal has undergone surgery for a “polytraumatism”, which includes cervical and thoracic trauma and another closed chest, after crash into a bus on a highway near Bogotá while training with his teammates from the Ineos Grenadiers team this Monday, January 24.

The La Sabana Clinic in the city of Chía, which has treated the 2019 Tour de France champion, has specified that Bernal “had to undergo surgery in the next few hours” because he has “cervical and thoracic trauma, closed chest trauma, musculoskeletal trauma and lower limb trauma“.

The medical center said in a statement that the 25-year-old cyclist has “hemodynamic stability” for the moment and stated that it will continue to report on its evolution.

According to the Traffic Police, the cyclist “who was traveling in the same direction and in the same lane (as the bus) did not observe the maneuver made by the vehicle, colliding from the back of it.”

Now, the runner is pending how it is “its progressive evolution in the next 72 hours” in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). “In addition, we immediately began the rehabilitation process to achieve the best possible results with our patient,” he said.

The serious accident suffered and its consequences compromise the entire season of the Colombian, who planned to defend his Giro d’Italia title and assault the podium of the Tour de France again. His recovery can reach twelve months.
