At least six people were killed during a stampede before the 1/8 finals of the African Cup of Nations. It is reported by The Guardian.
The incident occurred at the stadium in Yaounde before the meeting between Cameroon and Comoros. It is clarified that a crowd of fans tried to enter the stadium, despite the restrictions associated with the coronavirus pandemic. The Cameroonian authorities do not rule out that the number of victims may increase.
About 40 people were also injured in the incident. According to a source in the medical service, the condition of some of the victims is assessed as critical.
In 2017, two fans were killed in a stampede at a stadium in Johannesburg during a friendly match between South African teams Kaiser Chiefs and Orlando Pirates. The crush was provoked by fans who tried to break into the field from the stands of the stadium, which can accommodate 87,000 spectators.
