Egan Bernal will undergo surgery in the next few hours due to polytrauma after colliding with a bus on the Bogotá – Tunja highway | Other Sports | sports

La Sabana Clinic in the city of Chía said in a statement that the 25-year-old cyclist has “hemodynamic stability” at the moment.

Colombian cyclist Egan Bernal, leader of the Ineos Grenadier and partner of Richard Carapaz, will be operated on for a “polytrauma”, which includes cervical and thoracic trauma and another closed chest, after crashing into a bus on a highway on Monday close to Bogotá while training.

The La Sabana Clinic in the city of Chía, which treats the 2019 Tour de France champion, specified that Bernal “must undergo surgery in the next few hours” because he has “cervical and chest trauma, closed chest trauma, muscle trauma skeletal and lower limb trauma.

The medical center said in a statement that the 25-year-old cyclist is “hemodynamically stable” at the moment and said it will continue to report on his progress.

Bernal, also winner of last year’s Giro d’Italia, crashed into a bus on the highway that goes from Bogotá to Tunja, near the town of Gachancipá, in Cundinamarca (central Colombia), when the vehicle stopped abruptly to leave a passenger, according to the Transit Police.

That institution explained that the Ineos cyclist was traveling “in the same direction and along the same lane” as the bus and did not see “the maneuver made by the vehicle, colliding from the back of it.”

His team, the Ineos Grenadiers, confirmed the accident suffered by the winner of the Giro and the Tour and said that the athlete arrived at the hospital conscious and “is stable”.

Bernal’s accident recalls the one suffered by his compatriot Nairo Quintana on July 3, 2020 when he was hit by a driver while training on a highway in the central department of Boyacá, from which he is a native.

That caused polytraumatisms in one knee, for which he was inactive for two weeks.

After his recovery, Quintana returned to training and traveled to Europe in July to compete in the Dauphiné, from which he withdrew due to “pain in his knee” and in the Tour de France, in which he had limitations to show his best level . (D)
