Ortega arrived with the bulk of internationals who joined the work at the Celeste Complex this Monday to measure Paraguay and Venezuela.
The physical trainer of Atlético de Madrid, Óscar Ortega, joined the work of the coaching staff of the new Uruguay coach, Diego Alonso, on Monday, a position he said he assumes with “happiness” and “great responsibility”.
“It is an immense joy to return to this land so dear to one, the reunion with the family and Uruguayan football… It is a great happiness and a great responsibility,” said the Professor to the press when leaving the terminal of the Carrasco International Airport, on the outskirts of Montevideo.
The faithful squire of Diego Pablo Simeone in the successful career of the Argentine coach at the head of Atlético de Madrid pointed out to the cholos as the great architect of his presence in the Uruguayan national team.
“I saw it as very far away due to the responsibility I have in Spain and that it is difficult, but first of all we have to thank enormously the cholos Simeone, who allowed me the opportunity to be here and also the club, who did the work so that I could be with the national team”, he acknowledged.
For Ortega, La Celeste is “a team of the highest level”, which “will surely be in the World Cup” in Qatar 2022.
“I think that, with the level that the Uruguayan soccer players have, what should be highlighted above all is the confidence in them, the great competitive level that they stand out every day in all parts of the world,” he commented.
Ortega arrived with the bulk of internationals who joined the work at the Celeste Complex this Monday with a view to the double date of the South American qualifiers for the 2022 Qatar World Cup: against Paraguay on January 27 and against Venezuela on February 1.
The Uruguayan team is seventh in the standings, with 16 points, the same as Chile -sixth, with the best goal balance-.
The table is led by Brazil and Argentina, already with their ticket in hand for Qatar 2022, ahead of Ecuador (23), Colombia and Peru (both with 17).
The match against Paraguay, which will be played in Asunción on Thursday 27, will be Alonso’s official debut as coach of Uruguay, after almost 16 years of Óscar Washington Tabárez as head of the Celeste bench. (D)
