‘It didn’t benefit anyone’, says United coach of Cristiano Ronaldo’s reaction to replacement

During the match between Brentford and Manchester United fur English Premier League, already with a lead by two goals, the coach Ralf Rangnick decided to remove Cristiano Ronaldo to put a third defender. After being substituted, the Portuguese striker showed dissatisfaction with leaving the pitch before the end.

“I don’t blame him for that, but obviously any coach would want it not to be too emotional and also in front of the TV cameras. I don’t think it will be for the benefit of anyone: it was not for their own benefit or for their teammates.”

“I didn’t interpret that he was challenging me. This was not the first time, if you take a look at the moment Sir Alex Ferguson replaced him or other coaches, his reaction was quite similar, which shows in the end that it has nothing to do with the manager. It’s about his own ambition and desire to stay on the field,” Rangnick added.

Despite the controversy, the strategy to spare the striker for the game against West Ham paid off. Cristiano Ronaldo started as a starter, was not substituted and saw Rashford score the winning goal 1-0.
