The International Football Federation (Fifa) has called a meeting for December 20 with the aim of studying “the future of football” and, above all, its controversial proposal to organize the World Cup every two years instead of four, announced this Wednesday the entity.
The 211 federations that make up FIFA will meet in videoconference “to discuss the future of football after being informed about the consultation process on the matter”, explained the organization that commands the sport in the world.
The international body, which has launched a feasibility study since May 2021 on the possibility of holding the World Cup every two years, “will listen to all opinions in an inclusive and exhaustive consultation process”, declared Gianni Infantino, FIFA president.
The virtual summit will “aim to reach an agreement” on the international calendar and the distribution of game windows for national teams and the periods in which players are available to their clubs, the organization said.

The project for a biennial World Cup, promoted by FIFA, has generated several resistances among players, who denounce the increase in the frequency of matches.
Clubs also fear being deprived of their players any longer, and fan associations are wary of the possibility of football’s main competition being undervalued.
