This is what Paulo Sousa voted in the FIFA The Best poll

On Monday evening, there was a gala, which is – next to the “Golden Ball” – the second most prestigious poll for the best footballer in the world, where not so much 2021 is taken into account, but the period from October 2020 to August 2021. And although Leo Messi should do it rejoice because he did not raise Ligue 1 in the fall after his transfer to PSG, but the Argentine still lost to.

The captain won the German championship and the German Super Cup, and in the whole of 2021 he scored 69 goals. In the meantime, he broke Gerd Mueller’s historic record for the number of goals scored in one Bundesliga season (41). There was no surprise. The Pole won this plebiscite for the second time in a row.

We can write about the surprise only after reviewing some of the ballots. Let us recall: the current captains and selectors of the national teams, journalists and Internet users took part in the vote. Paulo Sousa was one of the jurors.

FIFA The Best. How did Paulo Sousa vote?

After the awards ceremony, we found out who voted. The Portuguese coach put Lewandowski in the first place. Sousa also included Chelsea midfielders on the podium. Jorginho was second and N’Golo Kante was third.

A dozen or so days ago, Sousa resigned as the coach of the Polish national team and accepted Flamny’s offer. In the meantime, he did not even say goodbye to Polish footballers, although for many months he emphasized his strong bond with them. During the vote, however, he remembered Lewandowski.

How did the players vote? Lewandowski voted for Jorginho, followed by Messi in second and Cristiano Ronaldo in third. On the other hand, the PSG player decided to take a very strange step that could undermine the seriousness of the plebiscite: he voted for his teammates. He placed Kylian Mbappe and Neymar in the first two places. Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema came in third.

Lewandowski commented on the results of FIFA The Best

– Thank you very much. I am honored and proud. It is also an award for my coaches and the team – said Lewandowski. The Pole also referred to the broken records of Gerd Mueller. The legendary German was also awarded and mentioned during the gala. – I have never dreamed of breaking this record. All these records that I am breaking – thank him, because without him it would not be possible – said Lewandowski.
