The Norwegian men’s handball team refused to fly on the same flight as the Russian team. It is reported by Nettavisen.
The teams participating in the preliminary stage of the 2022 European Championship in Kosice were supposed to travel on the same plane to Bratislava, which will host the matches of the main round of the tournament. However, the Norwegian delegation chose to cover the distance of 430 kilometers by bus.
This decision is due to the desire of the Norwegians to minimize the risk of infection with coronavirus. The team emphasized that they consider the bus a safer means of transportation in a pandemic.
On January 17, it became known that the handball players of the Russian national team Andrey Vereshchagin and Daniil Shishkarev became infected with the coronavirus. Because of this, they missed the final match of the preliminary stage of the European Championship against Slovakia (36:27).
The Russians won three victories at the preliminary stage of the continental championship, in one of the matches the team beat Norway. At the group stage of the main round, the Russian team will meet with Germany, Poland, Spain and Sweden. The top two teams in the group will advance to the semifinals.
