FIFA announced the winner of The Best this Monday. Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski edged out Paris Saint-Germain’s Lionel Messi and Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah to take the 2021 World Player of the Year award for the second time in a row.
The athlete from Bayern and the Polish national team has accumulated 51 goals in 44 matches, in addition to eight assists. In the German Championship and in the German Supercup, the striker led the team in winning both tournaments.
Barcelona’s attacking midfielder Alexia Putellas won the award on the women’s side, confirming the favoritism and edging forward teammate Jenni Hermoso and Chelsea’s Sam Kerr.
The award considers the athlete’s performance during the European season. In this edition, the period evaluated was from October 8, 2020 to August 7, 2021.
Champions League champion with Chelsea, Thomas Tuchel won the award for best manager, while Emma Hayes, also of the Blues, won the title of best manager in women’s football, leading the team to the final of the Women’s Champions League.
Goalkeepers Édouard Mendy and Christiane Endler were awarded as the best of the position in men’s and women’s football, respectively.
