State Duma Deputy Svetlana Zhurova reacted to the recognition of the striker of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) Lokomotiv club Reid Bush of raping an underage girl. Her words are quoted by Sport24.
Zhurova said that the athlete could be deported from Russia at the request of the American side. She stressed that if his guilt is recognized, then law enforcement agencies will cooperate with the United States and extradite the criminal to them. “Maybe he wants to hide in Russia, but it will be a great shame if this hockey player continues to play in Russia and receive a salary here,” the deputy added.
On January 16, the leadership of the KHL stressed that they would not comment on this case until the court’s decision. In addition, Lokomotiv announced that Bush continues to train in the first team.
The hockey player confessed to rape on December 13, 2021. The crime happened in 2011, at that time Bush was 17 years old, and the girl was 12. Initially, he was charged with a first-degree sexual offense, for which he could receive from 25 years to life imprisonment. However, during the hearing, the district judge allowed Bush to file for a lesser charge. Also, the hockey player will avoid preliminary imprisonment.
