The US Figure Skating Federation has supported Timothy Leduc, who will become the first-ever non-binary athlete at the 2022 Beijing Olympics. This was reported on the organization’s official Instagram page.
“We are proud of Timothy Leduc, who was the first to openly declare his non-binary character,” the message says. The federation stressed that they condemn incitement to hatred against any member of the American team.
On January 12, Canadian figure skater Megan Duhamel demanded that the International Skating Union (ISU) punish Russian coach Alexander Zhulin, who called the skater Ledyuk a freak. Zhulin said that he would not apologize for his words.
On January 10, the US national figure skating team announced the squad for the 2022 Olympics. The list includes Leduc, who identifies himself as a gender that falls out of the binary system. He announced his non-binary gender identity last year. Leduc paired up with Ashley Kane-Gribble in January this year to win the US Championship.
