The next, and to be precise, the 110th edition is approaching. The start of the first Grand Slam tournament in 2022 is scheduled for January 17th and will run until January 30th. It is already known that the next edition will be completely different from the previous ones due to the still raging coronavirus pandemic.
Another Pole, sure of his performance at the Australian Open. He does not have to participate in qualifying
Until recently, it seemed that we would surely see only four Poles at the Australian Open. The main tournament ladder included: Hubert Hurkacz (10th ATP), Iga witek (8th WTA), Magda Linette (55th WTA) and Magdalena Fręch (105th WTA). Our other representatives were to take part in the qualifying session.
On Monday, however, it turned out that there is still (107th ATP) to be in the main ladder. A few days ago, the Pole received a positive test for coronavirus, which could have completely excluded him from the tournament, because he could not take part in the starting qualifications.
– I’m glad that I will play in the Australian Open without having to break through the qualifying round, because it always allows you to save some strength in the legs before possible five-set matches in the Grand Slam. Anyway, in the current situation, I would not even be able to join them, because of the positive COVID-19 result that I received on Friday. It prevented me from playing in the ATP Cup semi-final against Spain. According to the procedures, I will now have to undergo a seven-day quarantine in Sydney, Majchrzak said.
It turned out, however, that it would not be necessary. All thanks to the American Jenson Brooksby, who withdrew from the competition. Thanks to this, Majchrzak does not have to participate in the qualifying round. Only three Poles will take part in these events: Kacper Żuk (168th ATP), Urszula Radwańska (231st WTA) and Katarzyna Kawa (155th WTA).
