The cause of death of the Olympic champion of the 1980 Games

The cause of death of the Olympic champion of the Games in Moscow in 1980, weightlifter Viktor Mazin has been named. TASS reports.

The adopted son of the eminent athlete Igor Devyatkin said that Mazin suffered from throat cancer. He died at the age of 67. The relative also added that the funeral will be held in the village of Pokrovka, Krasnoyarsk Territory – there is the grave of the father of the Olympic champion. The weightlifting federation of the region, according to Devyatkin, will help in organizing the funeral.

Mazin’s death became known earlier on January 8. This was reported on the website of the Russian Weightlifting Federation.

Mazin won gold in the category up to 60 kilograms at the 1980 Olympics, which took place in Moscow. He set an Olympic record in snatch (130 kilograms) and a new Olympic record for weightlifters in his weight category – 290 kilograms.

In 1978 Mazin won the USSR Cup. He also took second place at the Summer Spartakiad. Before the Olympics, he became the champion of the Soviet Union.
