More than 10,000 infected with COVID-19 is estimated this week and the number is expected to rise in Ecuador

The Minister of Health asked the population to avoid social gatherings this and next week to avoid infections.

Ecuador is going through crucial days. The new wave of infections triggered the cases, leaving behind those weeks when it seemed that the pandemic seemed to subside. Confirmed COVID-19 cases from week 52 reached 7,234. And this week, with numbers still in processing, the cases are estimated to exceed 10,000.

“These figures put Ecuador in an epidemiological condition similar to the weeks of the worst outbreaks of the pandemic,” the Minister of Health, Ximena Garzón, acknowledged yesterday at a press conference.

And the figures may increase further next week, considering that the infections due to the end of the year parties may be appearing. What influences that the system is not yet collapsed is that vaccines make the cases milder, less severe than in the strong months of 2020.

Of the 892 antigen tests for COVID-19 that were carried out in Machala between Monday and Wednesday of this week, 382 yielded a positive result, that is, more than 47% of the total number of people who went to the points activated by the Ministry of Public Health (MSP).

Given the increase in patients with symptoms related to the virus in the capital of El Oro, eleven vaccination points were activated.

“Together with other public institutions, such as the mayor’s office and the government, we managed to increase the vaccination points. The antigen test is not done on demand, the patient must have symptoms to do it, ”said Priscila Hurtado, director of the Machala Health District.
