Forwards Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani make up the first list released by the new Uruguayan national team coach, Diego Alonso, for the South American qualifiers against Paraguay and Venezuela, the Uruguayan Football Federation said on Friday.
The squad is made up of 50 players and in the coming days the list of 23 players will be announced for the games against Paraguay, in Asunción, on January 27th, and against Venezuela, in Montevideo, on February 1st.
In addition to Cavani and Suárez, there are other historical figures such as captain Diego Godín and some emerging players such as young Agustín Canobbio.
In December last year, Alonso replaced veteran Oscar Tabárez, who spent 15 years at the helm of Celeste, a world record for a coach.
With four rounds to go until the conclusion of the South American Qualifiers, Uruguay faces a decisive phase to qualify for the 2022 Qatar World Cup.
Currently, it occupies the seventh position in the tournament that offers four direct spots and the fifth the possibility of a play-off with a team from another continent. Brazil and Argentina took the first two spots.
Alonso, 46, started his coaching career in 2011 at club Bella Vista and then at Peñarol, both in Uruguay, and also had experience in Mexico (Pachuca and Monterrey), Paraguay (Guarani and Olímpia). Then, he transferred to Inter Miami until reaching the command of Celeste.
