The Dakar director does not consider suspending the race after the explosion in a car

David Castera, director of Rally DakarHe assured this Friday that they are not considering stopping the current edition of the race in Saudi Arabia, in reaction to the statements of the French Foreign Minister, Jean-Yves Le Drian, and after the explosion of the pilot Philippe’s vehicle Boutron, December 30th.

“To this day, the question does not arise because there are no additional elements. The question is to know what happened on December 30,” he said on the chain France TV Sport.

Castera He noted that the organization and the Saudi authorities have put in place additional security measures, especially in the camps, departures and arrivals.

In an interview with the channel BFM TV, The Drian He said this Friday that he would have preferred to stop the Dakar after the explosion of the Frenchman’s vehicle Boutron, who had to undergo emergency surgery after suffering serious injuries to his legs, and spent several days in a coma, from which he has already emerged, according to his son confirmed yesterday.

The French Antiterrorist Prosecutor’s Office is investigating the events and the Government has confirmed its suspicions that the explosion was an attack and not an accident, as Saudi Arabia was quick to say at first.

Castera He stated that if the hypothesis of the attack is confirmed, there are open questions about the continuity of the two-year contract with Saudi Arabia.

“With all these elements, it is true that it raises questions. For now, until we have all the answers, we have to wait. We finish this race and we will see later,” he said.

“If we do sports it is to enjoy and live our passion, not to be the victim of an attack, if that is the case. It is a huge sadness. Our thoughts are with him,” he added.
