Fight between fans leaves several injured in Slovakia

Several people were injured in violent clashes between fans of two Slovak football teams on Sunday in the town of Trnava, about 60km from the country’s capital, Bratislava, according to authorities.

On minute 16, the referee ended the match between Spartak Trnava and Slovan Bratislava, two teams that occupy the top two positions in the Slovak Championship, after fans threw stones and fireworks towards the field.

“During the match, several spectators invaded the pitch and a fight broke out,” said police spokeswoman Maria Linkesova, quoted by local TASR agency.
As a result of the clashes, many fans suffered injuries and were treated while still on the field.

“The organization did not allow 200 or 300 Spartak fans to enter the stadium,” Slovan Bratislava said in a statement.

“We didn’t want to continue when our fans were unjustly punished and expelled from the stadium,” said club general manager Ivan Kmotrik Jr.

“It should have been a football party, but in the end it’s a pity for football,” lamented Spartak Trnava coach Michal Gasparik, quoted by SME newspaper.

On their official website, Slovak police posted a video of riot police escorting fans out of the Trnava stadium.
