Marek Papszun has been running Rakow Częstochowa since 2016. With the club from Jasna Góra, he was promoted from the second league to the top league. In the last season, he won the Polish vice-championship, adding the Polish Cup, the Super Cup and the first promotion to the European cups in the club’s history. Raków Papszyna was close to qualifying for the group stage of the League of European Conferences, and the coach – thanks to these results – began to be perceived as one of the best Polish trainers.
“Papshun is the best candidate”
In autumn, information appeared that the 47-year-old coach was going to be used by Legia Warsaw, which was in a great crisis. On November 25, the president and owner of the club from Łazienkowska – Dariusz Mioduski, spoke openly about it.
– We want to communicate with the trainer and his staff. If it is not possible to hire him in winter, we are ready to wait until the end of the season. I believe that Marek Papszun, with appropriate working conditions, which are in Legia, is currently the best candidate to develop our team in the coming years. I am convinced that the charisma, knowledge and experience of coach Papszun will be very positively combined with the philosophy of the club – he confirmed
Papszun himself was to be inclined to move to the capital where he came from. However, he himself did not intend to speak in the media, cutting the subject off at every possible opportunity. The coach, like his current club, were even irritated by the actions of Dariusz Mioduski.
– Dariusz Mioduski talks a lot about culture and cooperation between clubs, but his certain behavior shows that he probably does not know what he is talking about – he commented. – I do not assume such an option that coach Papszun will leave us in the winter. Especially since all the cards are still in our hands. At least until summer – he added.
Papszun rejected Legia’s offer. He is to stay in Raków
Marek Papszun spent a few days of vacation around New Year’s Eve away from Poland – in Dubai. He did not return to the country until Tuesday, but he was sure of his decision. Raków coach rejected Legia’s offer and he is “definitely closer” to signing a new contract with the current club.
The details of the contract are yet to be determined, but it can be expected that Papszun – the best earning in the entire league, who according to various sources receives 130-150 thousand. zlotys per month – will receive a large increase. Papszun and the club’s owner, Michał Świerczewski, get along so well that an agreement regarding a new contract seems to be a formality.
What could that change? A phone call from Cezary Kulesza, president of the Polish Football Association. For now, the topic of Marek Papszun in the Polish national team is not present, the coach himself does not think about it and does not wait for the phone call. But if the topic did arise, Raków would not be causing his trainer any problems. Therefore, in order to avoid unnecessary movements, the very signing of a new contract in Częstochowa and the announcement of this fact may be delayed until the selection of a new team selector. That is until January 19, because this was the date that Kulesza had recently declared.
In Warsaw, the decision of the Pope was probably foreseen. When there were only four days left to the end of the year, i.e. the date when Raków’s coach was to make a decision, Dariusz Mioduski again surprised everyone with his inconsistency. He replaced Radosław Kucharski (sports director and boss of “Operation Papszun”) with Jacek Zieliński, who was to be more skeptical about the coach of Poland’s runners-up. This probably ended Legia’s serious plans on this subject.
Papszun was already leading Rakow in 224 official matches, including 86 in the league. His team is currently third in the table, six points behind the leader of Lech Poznań.
