Former Russian hockey player and world champion 2008 Fyodor Tyutin harshly criticized the appointment of Roman Rotenberg as head coach of SKA. The appointment became known the day before: Rotenberg replaced Valery Bragin in this position.
“I am not surprised by Rotenberg’s appointment to SKA, given this man’s megalomania. Everything went towards this, and, I think, this is not his last position: there is a more prestigious one. He has plans to manage everything as I see it. How correct is this? Correctly and Rothenberg are two opposite things. And reading the opinions of our respected hockey veterans and experts that Rotenberg deserved it, I can’t call it anything other than hypocrisy, ”Tyutin said in an interview with Sport24.
Fans of St. Petersburg football are also not happy with the appointment. Russian theater and film actor, singer Mikhail Boyarsky in an interview with Metaratings.ru called the decision “unknown”, since the professions are incompatible.
“Perhaps he will make administrative decisions, but as a hockey coach he does not correspond to the profession, this is not his hypostasis. I think that there is some kind of cunning solution that is still incomprehensible to me, and not only to me. It’s like appointing the artistic director of the ballet as the main director of the theater. This is excluded, because there are different professions, “Boyarsky said.
Hannu Yortikka, who worked in the KHL from 2011 to 2014, as reported by Sport24.ru, called the appointment of Rotenberg as a coach “a parody”. When I heard about this, I first experienced laughter, and then shame. Are coaches so disrespectful? You understand that no one except Russian coaches knows how to coach. Now there are not enough Russians and they have to hire a person from the managerial level. This is a parody, but this is what happens to this boy all his life. Everything is allowed to him. Will SKA fall apart at Rotenberg? I do not think. They have a good team, and Bragin remains at the headquarters. Plus there are good hockey players in the team “
“Rotenberg has dual citizenship of Finland and Russia, previously he was a member of the management staff of Jokerit. He took responsibility for SKA with little or no coaching experience. It’s not just a noisy passage, it’s a real crash, ”says Vinsky Virtanen from Iltalehti.
“Back in 2014, when Roman Rotenberg was included in the US sanctions lists, he ironically said that in this way America recognized his services to Russia. At the same time, Jokerit moved to the KHL, and Rotenberg himself said that his business created a lot of jobs in Finland, ”recalls the Finnish portal Yle.
“He was a co-owner and vice-president of the largest club in Russia – SKA. Now he is also the head coach. The news became a bomb in Russian hockey circles and was met with criticism. The 40-year-old businessman is vice president of the FHR, is on the board of the KHL, was the general manager of the Russian national team and owns the home arena of the Finnish club Jokerit, – notes the Swedish edition of Aftonladet.
“One of the top clubs in the KHL now has a head coach who has not coached a day before. Roman Rotenberg has not played hockey at a professional level and has not coached before, but since 2019 he has a coaching license. Last year, he said on TV that he had watched about 800 hockey matches since 2014, which is already a serious experience, ”Delfi Sport sneers.
