On New Year’s Eve in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, he lit fireworks. 138 meters in the first training series, 139 meters in the next jump and 138.5 meters in qualifying – three impressive distances and three places in the lead. A show of form just two days after Żyła took 38th place in Obertsdorf, in the inaugural competition of the 70th.
– We had the worst competition in years in Oberstdorf. We look at jumping in Ga-Pa with all the more joy – notes Jan Szturc.
Yes, two days ago only one Pole scored World Cup points – 28. Dawid Kubacki. Jakub Wolny finished 32nd, Paweł Wąsek was 33rd, Żyła 38th and 41st. Andrzej Stękała, on the other hand, was eliminated in Oberstdorf in qualifying, in which he was 60.
In Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the Poles performed well in all three Friday series.
In the New Year’s competition (beginning at 2 p.m. – live coverage on Sport.pl, broadcasts on Eurosport, TVN and Player) we will see all six of us.
“Hope the boys will believe they are good again”
– Piotrek is a great hope for a breakthrough in our team. That the boys will believe again that they are good, that they are prepared as they should be and that they will use what is in their legs, she says.
– Kamil also looks positive. You can still see his reserves. At the time of reflection. The approach position is now stable, but when Kamil starts his rebound, Kamil’s hip drops. But here it is enough to make a small correction and it will be very good – analyzes the trainer.
“May Żyła spoil this way”
Żyła also has reserves. He himself said right after qualifying in Eurosport that he broke the jump a bit. – Piotrek’s ski left the door and there were some hesitations in the middle phase of the flight. But it was wound by the hip above the ski, which is why it flew away anyway. May it always just spoil it – smiles Szturc.
She lived in Ga-Pa is impressive. And he regrets that he was not lucky in Oberstdorf. There he won the trial series before the competition, flying 137 meters. And in the competition he landed at 114 meters, losing probably mainly with a very strong wind in the back (1.55 m / s, as much as +20.3 points).
– In Oberstdorf, Piotrek was really unlucky. He made a mistake there, he was driving too aggressively to the threshold. And as a result, he was a little bit moved in the passage, it was rocking backwards. But despite this, he would fly away even from a worse reflection, if he had not had the worst wind – convinces Szturc.
Out of all 50 jumpers of that competition, only Kubacki had worse wind (1.65 m / s from the back, for which he got +21.6 points).
– Too bad, Oberstdorf has passed. Now it will be New Year and we have new hopes. Of course, Piotrek can fight for the podium. You can’t get out of shape that quickly. Not within 24 hours – says the coach of Szturc. – Piotrek will welcome the New Year with a calm head. I think that the mood in the whole team is definitely better and will be even better – he adds.
Kubacki – Granerud. Possible surprise?
Of all the Poles preparing for the New Year’s competition, he has the most difficult rival. Granerud is the runner-up of the 70th 4-Hills-Tournament. – It is possible that both will enter the second round. And it is not said that David will lose. He jumps better and better. I believe that even if he loses, he will be promoted to the final “30” – says Szturc.
The expert does not give Stękala a greater chance in the fight against Peier. – Andrzej has big problems with his jumps. On the other hand, everything is open through Wolny and Narrow. Only here you have to jump at ease. This is a condition to be promoted to the second series – says Szturc.
“Maybe they were physically too strong”
At the end, our coaching authority takes into account the statement by Żyła for Eurosport. “Honestly: I don’t know if physically I was ever better than now” – said the world champion.
– This is very good news for the head. If Piotrek feels a leg, he fires up, believes in himself very much. He said the same thing at the World Cup. I think we will see him on the New Year with a smile on his face that he will be very pleased – comments Szturc.
– It happens with jumps that the beginnings are not always what we would like and that you have to patiently wait for a good, strong accent – says the coach. – It is possible that our jumpers were physically too strong and that only now they get the optimal feeling and find the best technique. I believe that a good time for them is just beginning – sums up Szturc.
