Meagan Duhamel calls decision to leave 2022 Olympic bronze to Russians a blow to sport
Olympic figure skating champion Canadian Meagan Duhamel on Instagram (a social network banned in Russia; belongs to the Meta company, which is recognized as an extremist organization and banned in the Russian Federation) condemned the decision of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to leave the bronze medal in the team figure skating tournament at the 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing to the Russian team.
The athlete called the verdict a blow to Olympic sport. In her opinion, Canadian figure skaters deserved medals at the 2022 Games. “Imagine a swimming relay race where one participant is found to be doping, but the team still gets medals,” Duhamel emphasized.
On August 2, CAS rejected the appeal filed by the Canadian side in February. Thus, the Russian team retained the bronze medal in the team figure skating tournament of the 2022 Olympics.
On January 29, CAS disqualified Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva for four years for violating anti-doping rules. Traces of the banned drug trimetazidine were found in the skater’s sample from December 2021. All of the athlete’s results from that date were annulled. In particular, Valieva, along with her teammates on the Russian national team, were stripped of the gold for winning the team tournament at the 2022 Olympic Games.
The Russian team remained the winner of the competition, moving from first to third place, gold went to the USA, silver to Japan. If the Russian team had been disqualified, bronze would have gone to Canada.
