In extra time, France defeats Egypt in men’s football and competes for gold against Spain at the Olympics

On Monday, in a match valid for the semi-final of the men’s football at the Paris Olympic Games, France faced Egypt at the Gouprama Stadium, winning 3-1 with two goals in extra time and qualifying for the grand final of the tournament, where they will play for the gold medal. Mateta (2) and Olise scored for the French team, while Mahmoud Saber reduced the deficit for the Egyptians.

With the victory, France now knows its opponent in the final. The French will face Spain, who defeated Morocco 2-1 at the Vélodrome stadium, also on Monday, in the other semi-final. Egypt, in turn, will face the Moroccans in the third-place play-off.

The gold medal match will take place next Friday at 1pm (Brasília time) at the Parc des Princes. The Egyptians will face the Moroccans next Thursday at 12pm at the Matmut Atlantique Stadium in Bordeaux.

Egypt opened the scoring in the 16th minute of the second half. After receiving a cross from the right wing, Mahmoud Saber controlled the ball in the area and shot, but was blocked. On the rebound, the striker cleared the marker and kicked high, hard, leaving goalkeeper Restes with no chance.

France equalised in the 37th minute of the second half. After a pass from Olise behind the defence, Mateta received the ball, took it at speed and, face to face with goalkeeper Alaa, shot across goal to level the score.

In extra time, in the first minute of the first half, defender Fayed received his second yellow card after a strong tackle on Doué, was sent off and left the match early.

The French goal came eight minutes into the first half of extra time. After a cross from Olise on the right, Sildillia headed the ball to Mateta who, at the far post, rose higher than his marker and headed the ball powerfully to extend the lead.

Three minutes into the second half of extra time, France doubled their lead. Olise took advantage of a loose ball from Egypt’s defensive error, struck a powerful shot and secured France’s place in the final of the Paris Olympics.
