Egypt opened the scoring in the 16th minute of the second half. After receiving a cross from the right wing, Mahmoud Saber controlled the ball in the area and shot, but was blocked. On the rebound, the striker cleared the marker and kicked high, hard, leaving goalkeeper Restes with no chance.
France equalised in the 37th minute of the second half. After a pass from Olise behind the defence, Mateta received the ball, took it at speed and, face to face with goalkeeper Alaa, shot across goal to level the score.
In extra time, in the first minute of the first half, defender Fayed received his second yellow card after a strong tackle on Doué, was sent off and left the match early.
The French goal came eight minutes into the first half of extra time. After a cross from Olise on the right, Sildillia headed the ball to Mateta who, at the far post, rose higher than his marker and headed the ball powerfully to extend the lead.
Three minutes into the second half of extra time, France doubled their lead. Olise took advantage of a loose ball from Egypt’s defensive error, struck a powerful shot and secured France’s place in the final of the Paris Olympics.
Spain vs Morocco
In a semi-final match of the other group, Spain faced Morocco at the Vélodrome stadium in Marseille, winning 2-1 and also securing access to the final. Fermín López and Juanlu scored for the Spanish, while Rahimi scored for the Moroccans.
