US triathlete Ryder stopped washing his hands after going to the toilet before swimming in the Seine

US triathlete Seth Ryder has stopped washing his hands after using the toilet before swimming in the Seine at the 2024 Olympic Games, The Sun reports.

The athlete explained his decision by saying he wanted to develop immunity to E. coli. ā€œI’m just trying to raise my infection threshold by exposing myself to small amounts of it in my daily life,ā€ he said.

Earlier, French President Emmanuel Macron admired the swims on the Seine River. “Thanks to large-scale investments by the state, including Paris and Val-de-Marne, in four years we have achieved what was impossible for 100 years: you can swim in the Seine,” the head of state wrote.

On July 31, the swimming stages of the men’s and women’s triathlon competitions took place in the Seine. The athletes were unable to conduct pre-race training in the river, as it was cancelled due to poor water quality.
