2024 Olympic medalist speaks out about absence of Russians at tournament

2024 Olympic Judo Medalist Makhmadbekov: It’s a Pity There Are No Russians in the Tournament

The bronze medalist of the 2024 Olympic Games in judo, Somon Makhmadbekov from the Tajikistan national team, spoke about the absence of Russians at the tournament. His words are quoted by Izvestia.

“Of course, it’s a pity. Even from our club, two people were selected, in 60 and 66 kilograms. The guys worked hard the entire cycle, and it all ended with this situation,” he said. In his opinion, this affected the level of competition at the Olympic tournament.

At the Paris Olympics, Makhmadbekov’s cousin, representing Russia Makhmadbek Makhmadbekov, could have competed in the same weight category of up to 81 kilograms. He accepted the invitation from the International Olympic Committee (IOC), but later declined, like other Russian judokas. “I dedicate the medal to my brother, among other things, I am one hundred percent sure that he is happy for me,” said Somon Makhmadbekov.

The Olympic Games are taking place from July 26 to August 11 in Paris. Russian judokas and wrestlers have refused to participate in the tournament, despite an invitation from the IOC.
