Mbappé becomes owner of French Second Division club

Kylian Mbappé became the new owner of SM Caen, a French Second Division club, on Tuesday. The purchase was made through the Real Madrid striker’s investment fund. The transaction value for 80% of the club’s shares is around 15 million euros (around R$91 million), according to the French newspaper The team.

The documents were signed on Tuesday night and the purchase is only subject to the presentation of the project to the club’s Economic and Social Council (CSE) and the National Directorate of Control and Management (DNCG) of Professional Football League (LFP). This movement should be completed in the first fortnight of August and is considered merely a formality.

Despite Mbappé being the new owner of 80% of the institution – previously owned by the American group Oaktree – Pierre-Antoine Capton remains a minority shareholder, with 20% of the club under his name.

Mbappé has faced Caen eight times as a player for Monaco and PSG, four games each. In that time, he has scored seven goals and provided two assists, and is unbeaten with six wins and two draws.

The move comes shortly after the striker’s transfer to Real Madrid on a free transfer from PSG. This will be the first time Mbappé has played outside of France.
