Liverpool’s 10-game unbeaten streak ended on Tuesday. For the 20th round of the Premier League, coach Jurgen Klopp’s team lost 1-0 to Leicester, at King Power Stadium. Lookman scored the home team’s goal, while Mohamed Salah stopped Schmeichel after taking a penalty kick in the first half.
The game was the last of the two clubs in 2021. With the result, Liverpool saw the distance to leaders Manchester City increase to six points, but remain in second place. Leicester, on the other hand, rose to ninth place, with 25 points.
Even away from home, Liverpool pressured from the start of the match, but stopped in the good defenses of Schmeichel. After 14 minutes, Salah dominated inside the area and was brought down by Ndidi. The shirt 11 himself took the penalty, but hit weak and saw the goalkeeper of Leicester palm. On the rebound, the Egyptian even headed the crossbar.
Schmeichel still appeared well on three other occasions in the first half, defending a closed cross by Oxlade-Chamberlain, an attempt by Diogo Chuta and a strong shot by Salah, who had the upper hand inside the area after a defense failure.
Leicester, on the other hand, did little in the first stage. In the best chances of the hosts, the visiting defense managed to block the submissions.
In the second half, Liverpool had a great opportunity to open the scoring, but again wasted. Mané received a great pass from Jota, invaded the area and came face to face with Schmeichel, but kicked over the goal.
The mistake was costly, and Leicester took the lead in the 15th minute. Shortly after leaving the bench, Lookman played for Dewbury-Hall on the left, received it back at the entrance to the area, passed Matip and slammed into Alisson’s right corner to puff up the net.

After the conceded goal, Liverpool were unable to repeat the pressure of the first stage and did not scare them much. Tsimikas had a good chance of getting the submission after receiving a free-kick inside the area, but he preferred to cross and ended up making the defense’s work easier. Diogo Jota, on the other hand, turned his head in a corner kick and took danger.
The great opportunity came after 40 minutes. After crossing into the area, defender Van Dijk dominated and kicked low, demanding another big intervention from Schmeichel. With that, the score from 1 to 0 persisted until the final whistle.
Leicester returns to the field on January 1st to welcome Norwich. Liverpool face Chelsea the following day at Stamford Bridge.
