Dutch beach volleyball player Steven van de Velde was booed at the 2024 Olympic Games, France24 reports.
When the athlete entered the first match of the tournament after his name was announced, the spectators began to whistle. They also expressed disapproval during his serves. The 29-year-old volleyball player plays in pairs with Matthew Immers, who was met with applause.

In 2016, van de Velde was sentenced to four years for the rape of a 12-year-old girl two years earlier. The paedophile served part of his prison term in England before being extradited to his home country, the Netherlands.
It was previously reported that the athlete will not be staying with the team in the Olympic Village. In addition, he is prohibited from communicating with the media.
