Coach Edward Iordanescu has resigned from the Romanian national team, which reached the round of 16 of the European Championship, the country’s federation announced on Monday (22).
Iordanescu, 46, had a contract until the end of July and decided to “take a break” from his career, according to a statement.
“My work is done,” the coach wrote on his Facebook account, where he acknowledged that Romania has a generation of players “with fantastic potential” and expressed his desire to dedicate himself to his family.
In charge since the start of 2022, Iordanescu managed to qualify the Romanian national team for the Euros for the first time in eight years, with an unbeaten campaign in the qualifiers.
Surprisingly, the team finished the group stage of the continental tournament in the lead thanks to the best goal difference, as the four teams in their group all had 4 points.
The elimination came in the round of 16, with a 3-0 defeat to the Netherlands.
Edward Iordanescu, son of former national team coach Anghel Iordanescu, who led Romania to the quarter-finals of the 1994 World Cup, leaves his post with a record of ten wins, ten draws and eight defeats.
