Hugo, younger brother of Diego Maradona, died this Tuesday in Naples-ITA. At age 52, “El Turco”, as he was known, suffered a heart attack.
“Hugo Maradona died,” Napoli said in a brief statement, which confirmed the information released by the Italian press.
Club president Aurelio De Laurentiis and the team “join Maradona’s family in the pain of Hugo’s death,” the statement said.
The death of Hugo Maradona, father of three, was confirmed when the emergency service arrived at his home in Monte di Procida, on the outskirts of Neapolitan.
A former football player, he defended clubs in Italy, Austria, Spain, Argentina and Japan, before returning permanently to Italy and starting a brief coaching career with amateur teams in Naples.
Hugo recently joined a right-wing list for municipal elections, which were won by the left. The youngest of the Maradona brothers arrived in the southern Italian port city at just 18 years old, in 1987, coming from the Argentinos Juniors youth division.
After being hired, Napoli lent the athlete to Ascoli. On September 20, 1987, Diego and Hugo Maradona faced each other in a match won 2-1 by Napoli.
