Manchester United, Tottenham win pre-season friendlies; Milan draw

Tottenham, Manchester United and Milan took to the field this Saturday for their respective pre-seasons. While United managed to beat Rangers, from Scotland, by 2-0, Tottenham beat their compatriot QPR, from the Second Division of England, also by 2-0. Milan, on the other hand, were held to a 1-1 draw by Austria’s Rapid Vienna.

RANGERS 0 X 2 MANCHESTER UNITED

After a disappointing start to pre-season, losing to Rosenborg of Norway, Manchester United took to the field against the last Scottish runners-up, Rangers, at Murrayfield and won 2-0, with goals scored by Amad Diallo and Joe Hugill.

United fielded an alternative team, with some key players in the squad, including Mason Mount, Casemiro and André Onana. However, the highlight was the debut of 18-year-old French defender Leny Yoro. So far, Yoro has been the most expensive signing of the summer transfer window in Europe, costing the English coffers around €62 million (around R$378 at the current exchange rate).

In addition to Yoro, striker Jadon Sancho returned. He had fallen out with coach Erik Ten Hag last season and was later loaned to Borussia Dortmund.

The Manchester team has already been strengthening itself in the window and will seek to perform better in the Premier League compared to last season, when it finished in eighth place.

QUEENS PARK RANGERS 0x2 TOTTENHAM

Tottenham went into their second pre-season fixture and beat QPR 2-0. The game took place at QPR’s home ground Loftus Road and saw Yves Bissouma and Dane Scarlett score the goals.

Tottenham took to the field with some regulars, such as Bissouma, Sarr, Pedro Porro, Brennan Johnson and their main player, Korean Heung-min Son, who did not have a good match.

Ange Postecoglu’s side will be looking to achieve better success this season after missing out on a Champions League spot in the last Premier League season, finishing fifth.

RAPID VIENNA 1 X 1 MILAN

Milan and Rapid Vienna faced off at the Allianz Stadium in Austria, with the Italians suffering a late equaliser in the game, which ended 1-1. Alessandro Florenzi scored for Milan, while Furkan Demir pulled one back.

Milan preferred to give opportunities to the youngsters on the team, bringing in some regulars to play only in one half. The standout performer of the match was striker Daniel Maldini, son of the legendary Rossoneri defender Paolo Maldini. Daniel provided the assist for Florenzi’s goal.

Runners-up in last season’s Serie A, Milan will head into the 2024/25 season looking to rival the likes of Inter Milan and Juventus domestically. In the meantime, they will be looking to make a name for themselves in the Champions League, from which they were knocked out in the group stage in 2023.
