Olympic champion Van Rouwendaal to take antibiotics before Seine swim
2016 Olympic open water swimming champion Sharon van Rouwendaal has expressed concerns about the quality of the Seine’s water, AD reports.
Van Rouwendaal said she would take antibiotics prophylactically a few days before the race to prevent diarrhea. “I have to go out for training the day before the race. I did that last year too and I had a little cramping in my stomach, like a period. And we always drink cola after the race, they say it kills bacteria,” she said.
On July 17, Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo took a swim in the Seine. In this way, she decided to prove that the river is safe for holding competitions as part of the 2024 Summer Olympics. A few days earlier, French Sports Minister Amélie Oudéa-Caster took a swim in the Seine.
Before this, environmentalists found out that the quality of water in the river does not meet the standards recommended for swimming. However, the latest studies conducted at the end of June showed an improvement in water quality to acceptable levels.
The Olympic Games will be held in Paris from July 26 to August 11, 2024.
